Gioachino Rossini (1792-1868) was an Italian composer of around 40 operas, including the comic operas _The Italian Girl in Algiers_ and _The Barber of Seville_. Rossini championed melody and beautiful singing over operatic drama, rattling out sensational hit after hit until his early retirement at 37. His innovative work was influential on those who followed, notably Giuseppe Verdi (1813-1901).
