Richard Strauss (1864-1949) was a German conductor and composer of both innovative late-Romantic and Modernist music. He is best known for his symphonic poems and operas like _Salome_ and _Elektra_, both of which caused a sensation. Strauss gained a whole new generation of admirers when his _Also sprach Zarathustra_ was used in the 1968 film _2001: A Space Odyssey_.
