While I do love Troy, I agree with you about the gods. And I wish they had included more of them (the Assembly of the Gods) in The Odyssey. I wish Zendaya was given more to do as Athena.
So I finally got to watch it last night. I greatly enjoyed it! It’s a fantastic and epic retelling of the Odyssey, portraying a dark and gritty vision of the end of the Bronze Age. It mixes mythology (including gods and monsters) with real history (the fall of Troy and the Bronze Age Collapse).
The conclusions it draws don’t entirely line up with real history as Nolan’s version suggests that the conquest of Troy and the disregard for the ancient Greek concept of xenia (the law of hospitality, called Zeus’ Law in the movie) were a direct cause for the Bronze Age Collapse. At the same time, there’s Athena-Zendaya walking next to Odysseus, there are various monsters and dead men walking, and so it clearly isn’t meant as a historical movie. The Odyssey is mythology, so we cannot expect historical accuracy!
Overall, a cinematic feat of very high quality in my view. Excellent cinematography, moving music (a mix of ancient and modern), great acting and a good pace.
I’m planning on seeing it next week! Can’t wait!
I also thought that was an interesting choice to link the Bronze Age Collapse and looming threat of the Sea Peoples with the Fall of Troy and the people’s disrespect for Zeus’ Law.
I guess it was a way for Nolan to bring some real historical aspects into the movie, although the average audience wouldn’t have much knowledge of what those things actually are.

One thing that baffles me is that a large portion of the political right is criticising the movie, even though the movie’s message is deeply conservative: The disrespect of social norms and traditions leads to the downfall of civilization. Odd isn’t it, that the right doesn’t like the movie despite its message being so conservative?!?
Do think it came down to the idea of the casting for the right wing to enjoy it in any regards.
I’ve heard skewed perspectives from a lot of people from a lot of places and it mostly waters down to either liking it because its a Chris Nolan movie or they dont like it due to the casting. Generally hasnt been any in between these two perspectives.
You’re bang on with American accents - especially the unmistakable ones from New York. I watched it yesterday, and soon wished I hadn’t wasted my money. It’s far too LOUD in places, and the cinematography is horrendous. Much of the acting is pretty questionable also. Don’t waste your time or money.
