In regard to how many students will inevitably use AI, please consider how a teacher will have to train students to write term papers. AI will replace the need for students to search for authoritative sources to inform them about the topic of their research. In this regard, please note that teachers rarely instruct their students in how search for sources productively. This is true most fundamentally because the teachers, themselves, have not consciously recognized their own mental search methods. They (we) merely get good at searching for sources by trying and repeating these subconscious methods. A wise professor (not me) once gave students a wide ranging list of relevant sources that covered the contents of his semester course AND told his students that they could write their term papers using only those sources. The reason, he said, was to save them from wasting their time in the library on an Easter-Egg-Hunt for relevant sources. He made sure that all the titles were in the school’s bookstore so that each student could buy their own copies. (Nowadays, internet access to historical literature is much less expensive than buying books. Thank you WHE et. al.) THUS, nowadays, in our AI world, teachers should formulate a method for students to use when searching for valid information about their chosen topic. NOTE: Such a method will serve them akl their life, not just during their school years. Shamefullly, I have not formulated such a method that I could give to you all. I retired about a decade before the AI-epidemic. BUT, perhaps AI could be used for the websites it reports as sourses. Students should not rely on what the AI tells them (Don’t ask me how I know.) but dive deaper into the websites AND the websites’ literary sources written by knowledgable humans. We absolutely agree with your view on this. Good teachers are teaching their children how to find reliable information, using all of the tools they have at their disposal (which now includes AI). Relying on AI alone is definitely a bad idea.
That’s why our AI Research Assistant is very much about finding sources, not providing article-length answers like Google Search now does.
