Margaret Thatcher served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 4 May 1979 to 28 November 1990. Although the United Kingdom emerged militarily victorious from World War II (1939-45), it was still struggling with debt and inflation. In the 1970s, neoliberal views advocating privatization and monetarism gained popularity all over the globe, and Thatcher was one of its leading figures. As the first female prime minister of the UK, Margaret Thatcher remains one of the most controversial figures in British politics even today.
