Niche Images in Articles

As image editor, I’ve seen some success with images in articles that I think spark curiosity for their oddity / uniqueness / evocative quality. For me, personally, they’re fun to find and interesting to view.

For example, this: American Civil War Leg Prosthesis - World History Encyclopedia

Although the article in which that image appears is not about battlefield medicine, it’s relevant in that the Civil War commander the article is about did have a prosthesis. So I chose that additional image instead of another of a battle or portrait.

Perhaps having one or two of these types of images in an article might not only encourage further investigation, but also work to help differentiate the WHE visually from places like Wikipedia by adding more bespoke / niche selections. Just some thoughts!

Do you find these types of images engaging / interesting?

I think that’s an excellent idea. Just as curiostiy-driven headlines definitely help with people clicking through to our website, interesting and unique imagery can do the same thing.

I agree, I think it’s great!
It definitely makes the articles more appealing and I think it can also give a better idea of everyday life in the past, which can easily get lost behind the big events. Looking forward to seeing more of these types of images!
